Why Isn’t My Business Showing on Google Maps?
Ten reasons it happens, how to check each one, and how to fix it. Written for business owners in Vancouver, Surrey and the rest of BC.
You search for your own business on Google Maps and it isn’t there. Or it shows up when you type the exact name, but never when a customer types “plumber near me.” Either way, people who are ready to call someone are calling someone else.
The good news: it almost always comes down to one of ten things, and most of them you can check yourself in a few minutes.
First, Find Out Which Problem You Have
Do these three searches on your phone. What you see tells you where to look.
Search your exact business name
Nothing shows? Go to fixes 1 to 4.
storefrontSearch “[your service] near me”
Only your name works? Go to fixes 5 to 9.
location_offSearch again from 5 km away
Shows near you, vanishes further out? Go to fix 10.
You Don’t Show Up at All
If even your exact business name finds nothing, Google is either not showing your profile yet or has stopped showing it.
1. Your profile isn’t verified yet
Google doesn’t show a profile on Maps until you prove the business is real. That can be a postcard, a phone call, an email or a short video.
Check: sign in to your Business Profile. If you see “Verify now” or “Pending,” this is your problem. Fix: finish the verification step Google offers. Video verification is common now, so have your signage, tools or shop ready to show on camera.
2. Your profile was suspended
Google suspends profiles that break its rules. The most common reasons we see in BC:
- Extra words in your business name. “Smith Roofing Ltd” is fine. “Smith Roofing | Best Roofer Surrey” is not.
- A virtual office or mailbox as your address. Google says a rented mailing address where you don’t actually work “isn’t eligible.”
- A co-working desk with no sign. Google only allows a shared office if it “maintains clear signage.”
- Showing your home address when you go to customers. Service businesses should hide their address.
Fix: correct the problem first, then file a reinstatement request in your profile. Appeals that change nothing usually get rejected.
3. There are two of you
An old listing from a previous owner, a past address, or one made by a former marketing company can compete with yours and split your reviews.
Check: search your phone number and old addresses on Google Maps. Fix: claim the duplicate and ask Google to merge or remove it.
4. You just changed your name, address or category
Big edits can send a profile back for review, and it can disappear for a while. Moving from Vancouver to Surrey, for example, often triggers a fresh check.
Fix: make one change at a time, then wait. Don’t keep editing while it’s under review.
You Show Up for Your Name, but Not “Near Me”
This is the most common situation. Google knows you exist, but other businesses look like a better answer. Google says local results are based on three things:
Relevance
How well your profile matches what was searched.
Distance
How far you are from the person searching.
Prominence
How well known you are: reviews, links and mentions.
Fixes 5 to 9 are about relevance and prominence, the two you can actually change.
5. Your main category is wrong or too vague
Your primary category is one of the strongest signals you control. “Contractor” is vague. “Roofing contractor” tells Google exactly when to show you.
Fix: pick the most specific category for the work that pays your bills. Add your other services as secondary categories.
6. Your profile is half empty
No services listed, no description, three photos from 2019. Google can’t match you to searches it knows nothing about.
Fix: list every service by name, add real hours (not “open 24 hours” unless you truly are), write a plain description, and add recent photos of real jobs.
7. Your competitors have more reviews
Google says plainly that “more reviews and positive ratings can help your business’s local ranking.” If the top three plumbers near you have 150 reviews each and you have 9, that gap matters.
Fix: ask every happy customer, right after the job, with a direct link. Reply to every review. Don’t buy reviews or offer rewards for them; that can get your profile suspended.
8. Your website doesn’t back it up
Google reads the website linked from your profile. If it never mentions “roof repair” or “Burnaby,” Google has no proof you do that work there.
Fix: give each main service its own page, and name the cities and neighbourhoods you serve. See how we build this for Surrey businesses and Vancouver businesses.
9. Your details don’t match across the web
Google also says that if your business info isn’t accurate, your profile “might not show up for relevant searches in your area.” An old phone number on Yelp, a different suite number on YellowPages.ca: small mismatches add up.
Fix: make your name, address and phone identical everywhere. Here’s our guide to NAP consistency.

You Show Up Nearby, Then Disappear
10. Distance is doing its job
This one surprises people. Google Maps is built to show the closest good option, so every business has a bubble where it ranks well. Outside that bubble, closer businesses win.
We see it with our own business. Searched from our office on King George Blvd in Surrey, LocalFrame came up first on Google Maps for “web design.” Searched from Whalley, less than two kilometres north, we weren’t in the results at all. Same profile, same reviews. Only the location of the person searching changed.
In a crowded area like the Lower Mainland, that bubble can be small. There are simply a lot of businesses between Kitsilano and Cloverdale.
What actually helps with distance
- check_circleGrow prominence. More reviews, more links and mentions from local sites. A stronger profile gets a bigger bubble.
- check_circleSet your service areas if you travel to customers. It tells Google where you work, though it won’t make you rank everywhere on its own.
- check_circleWin the regular search results too. The normal Google results below the map are the same for everyone in the city. A strong page for “roofer Burnaby” reaches people your map pin can’t.
- check_circleWatch shared buildings. When several similar businesses share one address, Google often shows only one of them. If that’s you, reviews and a distinct suite number matter even more.
Can I just pay Google to show up?
No. In Google’s own words: “There’s no way to request or pay for a better local ranking on Google.” Google Ads can place a paid listing above the map, but it doesn’t change where your profile ranks.
How Long Until You Show Up?
It depends on the problem. A finished verification can show within days. A suspension appeal can take weeks. Ranking higher for “near me” searches is slower, usually a few months of steady reviews, a complete profile and a website that backs it up.
The trap is giving up after two weeks, or changing ten things at once and never knowing what worked. Fix the biggest problem first, then the next.

Common Questions
Why does my business show on Google search but not on Maps?expand_more
Usually your website is showing in the regular results, but your Business Profile is unverified, suspended, or too weak to make the map for that search. Start with fixes 1 and 2, then 5 to 7.
Why isn’t my business showing up after verification?expand_more
New profiles often show for the exact business name first and take longer to appear for general searches. Fill in the whole profile, start collecting reviews, and make sure your website and listings match.
Can I show up on Google Maps without an address?expand_more
Yes. If you go to your customers, like most trades, you can be a service-area business. You still verify with an address, but you hide it and list the areas you serve instead.
My profile disappeared after I changed my address. What now?expand_more
Address changes often trigger a new review or a suspension. Make sure the new address is a real place where you work, update it on your website and listings too, and follow any re-verification steps Google asks for.
